What we learned this weekend...

As the dust settled from a crazy weekend of upsets, the Top 10 found themselves licking the wounds from the buzzsaws that were look ahead games. Oklahoma, Florida, West Virgina (not a spelling error), Texas and Rutgers all succumbed to lesser opponents and officially shook up the BCS (even though the BCS poll is not out yet). I would be willing to bet that there haven't been that many losses in the top 10 in one weekend ever. I could be wrong but I don't care. Half of the teams lost. The biggest loser after the weekend is, undoubtedly, The Big East. The last two weekends have proven to be hell on earth for the Big East. South Florida excluded. The two powerhouses in the conference, or so we thought, heading into the weekend both lost (Rutgers and WVU). Thus, leaving South Florida as the only unbeaten, of significance, left in the conference. No offense to South Florida, but I would be shocked if they make it through the year undefeated. Who is the next biggest loser? Ah, that would be the Big 12/Red River Shootout. The big 12 went from two teams in the top 10 to no teams in the top 10. As for the Red River Shootout; it went from being a battle of top 10 unbeatens to a battle of two one loss teams. Don't get me wrong, the game will still be a heated battle and one that should make for some good entertainment, but it lost a little bit of it's luster. Last on the "biggest loser" list would be the Florida v.s. LSU game. Man, a night game in Red Stick...I mean Baton Rouge between the number 2 and 4 teams in the country. Not too mention the Tim Tebow express rolling into town. What a game. This game will still be the marquee game of the weekend, and Florida showed us last year that one loss doesn't ruin a season, but it has been slightly tarnished by UF's loss to Auburn. Meanwhile, out on the west coast, it became clear that USC is going to have some stout competition for the Pac-10 crown as Oregon and Cal duked it out in Autzen Stadium. Both teams showed explosive offenses, however, I believe it will be the defenses that cause their undoing. In the heartland, we learned that Wisconsin is the most mediocre number 5 team ever but more importantly, we learned that Notre Dame still sucks. Don't look now, but I believe the BCS is considering giving Notre Dame an at large berth again this year. Coach Weis, did you use the boilermaker recipe I gave you last week? In the Southeast, we learned that Tommy Bowden did it again. What is "it" you ask? "It," would be underacheiving for the umpteenth straight season. We also saw that St. Saban is going to need a little more than 5 games to return Alabama to prominence, much to the chagrin of crazy bama fans. Now, I'm fittin' to enhance yo brain with a little nugget for thought. BCS title game match-up...South Florida v.s. Ohio State. It's not as unfeasible as one might think.
